Wellington’s property managers and landlords now operate under New Zealand’s first mandatory meth contamination framework, in force from 15 April 2026. The previous NZS8510:2017 voluntary threshold of 1.5 µg/100cm² has been superseded by two enforceable statutory thresholds.
Any property across Greater Wellington must be decontaminated before re-letting if it tests above 15 µg/100cm². This applies whether the property is a Wellington CBD apartment, a Hutt Valley state house, a Porirua community housing unit, a Kāpiti Coast family home, or a Wairarapa rural rental. Properties above 30 µg/100cm² are uninhabitable, with tenancy termination rights triggered under the RTA. All records must be retained for at least 12 months after tenancy end.

Send the testing report to Kiwi Safeas. We analyse it and prepare a fixed-price quote and scope of work. Once approved, work starts within 2 working days.
Our IICRC certified technicians carry out systematic decontamination across all affected surfaces. Decontamination takes 2 to 3 working days in summer and 3 to 4 working days in winter. Kiwi Safeas completely dries the property before the testing company returns.
The independent testing company carries out post-decontamination testing once Kiwi Safeas has completed and fully dried the property. Results must be at or below 15 µg/100cm².
Once you receive the post-decontamination testing report, send it to Kiwi Safeas. We issue the formal clearance certificate for your Wellington region property.
